Sometimes, when I’ve worked really hard and I’ve made a new theater and a successful new play and the reviews are glowing and the houses are full and everyone’s thrilled with my creation, I like to focus on the negative. I like to find someone who is maybe not so thrilled, who withholds approval or interest, or expresses only luke-warm approval. I like to spend a lot of time worrying about that person and that lack, about what led us to this approval impasse and how I might mend it and get it. I spend a lot of time.

When I decided to create Little Bird, I knew exactly what I was after. They tell me that’s how it works: when we get clear about what we want, we manifest it. That’s certainly been the case here. I could not have imagined how easy, fulfilling and delightful every step of the process has been. It’s been a ton of work, yes, but everything has flowed. Obstacles have moved easily, or, mostly, failed to appear. People have been exceedingly generous. Everything worked beautifully.

And that’s when I do this thing, I go into negative mode. I’m generally a grateful, focus-on-the-positive kind of gal, but there’s something about Too Much Awesome that can send me into a tailspin. Luckily, I live in a place where huge birds fly by my window.

Last week an osprey flew low over my yard, a bald eagle in hot pursuit. They were swooping and diving, wheeling through the air. In his talons the osprey clutched a silver, flopping fish. The eagle chased the osprey as he faked left, angled right, then shot up into the air. The osprey hovered, bobbled — and dropped the fish. It fell, silver scales flashing, straight toward the ground. The eagle swooped easily down. She plucked the fish from mid-air and turned to fly back home.

When I first saw them, I would have told you that the eagle was chasing the osprey. But the eagle wasn’t after the osprey. The eagle was after the fish. If she’d followed the osprey, really gone after him, she’d have lost her prize. Which reminded me to give up on approval withheld and focus on what I’m really after: excellence, intellect, love and beauty. Artists and audiences alike feeling connected and alive. That’s the silver, slippery fish, and that is happening. All I have to do is enjoy.

Little Bird’s initial offering, “February September,” opened to rave reviews and sell out crowds. Audiences are filling our intimate space and praising the play’s humor, smarts and heart. The fabulous ensemble brings to life a thoroughly modern family with joy and skill. In her Cascadia Weekly article, Amy Kepferle calls Little Bird a success and says the play is “wholly enjoyable – intimate, funny and sometimes horrifying.” Christopher Key’s review in Entertainment News Northwest (scroll down to “Little Bird takes off”) calls the debut “sensational,” adding, “If there’s any theatrical justice, this show will sell out beginning to end.”

The show runs Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 8pm for the rest of April. Tickets available at the downtown Community Food Coop and at the door. We couldn’t be more pleased to share this work with you. Thanks for making it possible!

We’ve got a space! For March and April 2012, Little Bird will nest in the beautiful, historic Bellingham Hardware Building. It’s a long, narrow space that widens out at the back. That’s where we’ll create the stage. There’s even a built-in dressing room — at least that’s what it looks like to us! (Office, schmoffice.) A glass ceiling gives the room a cathedral-like feel. We’re having a blast transforming it into our own little home du jour.

Come by and take a peek — 215 W. Holly. We’re on the street level with big windows. It’s the former home of KCLT, right next to Film Is Truth, across the street from Backcountry Essentials and Mindport. Near the hatpin!

Special thanks to Daylight Properties for supporting Little Bird.

When I tell people that we don’t have a permanent home, that we’ll be doing pop-up productions, they often envision a bare bones set that can be easily put up and taken down. In fact, the goal of Little Bird is just the opposite. By doing short-term rentals, we believe we can create more polished productions. Because performance space is at a premium in Bellingham, the best way for theater owners to make ends meet is to pack in a new show every weekend. For those of us making plays, this means moving into a space just days before opening: simple sets, and no time to polish the piece in its environment. To address this challenge, Little Bird will be renting each space for two months, giving us the time and latitude to create a polished set. The actors and technicians will get to live into the world of the play more fully, creating a rich experience for our audiences. So remember, when you think pop-up, think polish!
